Sanwo-Olu Charge Law Officers to Demonstrate Professionalism and Civility

BY OKEDARA BANKALE The Lagos State government has charged Law enforcement Officers to show professionalism and be civil in their interactions with the public. Mr. Governor, Olusola Sanwo-Olu ably represented by his deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat said this at the Y2022 Mandatory Training exercise, Passing out Parade for law enforcement Officers at Lagos State law enforcement training Institute (LETI), Magodo recently. Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that this administration is irrevocably committed to upholding the tenets of the rule of Law and therefore will not Condone any form of harassment, arbitrariness, extortion from any of its law Enforcement Officers. He Further said, the Government will continue to strengthen the capacity of the law Enforcement Officers with the appropriate gadgets and equipment that will enhance their efficiency and effectiveness while also promoting accountability and transparency. Moreover, he urged all Lagosian to continue to be law abiding and support and protect men and Officers of law enforcement agencies in order to serve them better. In the same vein, the Head of LETI, Mrs. Abiola Adeyinka in her words, congratulated the Officers from the Agencies on the occasion of the passing out and added that training is important and necessary because it represent a good opportunity and privilege for staff to grow their knowledge base and improve their job skills to become effective and efficient in the work place. Mrs. Adeyinka laud the Lagos state investment committed to this training as worth while and its impact has become measurable by responses from the public. She said the recent positive development in the area of security have shown that despite the challenges, we can see a great light at the end of the tunnel and so, our dear Lagos is certainly poised for a new lease of life. Present at the law Enforcement passing-out-parade were dignitaries and members of the Nigeria Army, Police command and Directors of Agencies.

Prerogative Of Mercy: Sanwo-Olu Approves Release Of 46 Inmates.

…Committal Of 6 Death Roll Inmates to Life Imprisonment. Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu on the recommendation of the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy has approved the release of 46 inmates from various correctional facilities across the State and the commuttal of 6 inmates on death roll to life imprisonment. The Governor signed the release and commuttal orders on the 28th of September, 2022 in cognizance of the country’s 62nd Independence Day Celebration. The exercise is in pursuant to the provisions of Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of The Federal Republic of Nigeria (amended). The Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy in reaching its recommendations exercised due diligence in its deliberation of the applications in line with the applicable guidelines. The Council took note of the information provided by the correctional authorities, the nature of offence, period of incarceration, age, health and behavioral conduct of the inmates. The approval for the release of the inmates is in line with the commitment of Mr. Governor to decongest correctional facilities in Lagos State as part of the Justice Sector Reforms.

Honourable Attorney General, Lagos State Begins Electronic Signing Of Title Documents

The Lagos State Government under the leadership of Mr Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu in a bid to foster ease of doing business in Lagos State has through the Lands Bureau sorted, merged, scanned, indexed and digitised the files used in processing title documents in the State.  On  Thursday,   22   September   2022,   the   first   set   of electronic title documents designed  via Aumentum application  and  hosted on    Electronic   Geographical    Information    System    (EGIS)     Platform were   signed   by    the    Honourable    Attorney    General    and  Commissioner for Justice, Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo SAN.

Lagos Hosts Attorneys-General

… As Sanwo-Olu applauds the Body of Attorneys-General of States of the Federation Lagos State is currently hosting a 3-days meeting with the Body of Attorneys-General of States of the Federation (BOAGs) which is ongoing at the  Lagos Continental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos. The meeting is been organized to discuss several critical legal issues bordering on the London/Paris Club loan Refund claim, Value Added Tax (VAT), stamp duty, Amendments to the 1999 Constitution (Amended), among others. The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-olu in his welcome address applauded the body of Attorneys-General for organizing the meeting to discuss critical issues and proffer solutions for the betterment of the country. “The roles played by Chief Law Officers across the Federation cannot be overemphasized and we also know how important it is to have you all at the helm of affairs in the country”. Governor Sanwo-Olu noted. The governor expressed his delight at hosting the meeting, stating that he will continue to provide support to the BOAGs. In his keynote address, the Governor of Ondo State, Mr. Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu (SAN) stated that there can be no better time for the Chief Law Officers of the 36 States of the Federation to come together to critically look into provisions of the laws and the attendant issues thrown up as they continue the march to nationhood. Akeredolu noted that the 1999 Constitution has been amended twice in which there is another promise of further amendments arising from the manifest irregularities in many provisions, stating that this has compelled many lawyers and educated citizens to insist on having a new constitution which will reflect the agitations of the groups which make up the country He stated that the structure of the federal police has failed while calling on the establishment of state police to maintain law and order due to the current spate of insecurity across the country. The Governor challenged the 36 State Attorney’s General to take a stand on restructuring to curtail the Federal Government’s unbridled quest for more powers. The Attorney General of Lagos State and Interim Chairman of the BOAGs, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), in his address noted that the body was established as part of efforts to form a formidable force to take positions on legal issues, advice the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and take legal action or review legal actions taken on behalf of all the states. “The forum provides a platform for peer learning and deliberation on common issues that affect the collective interest of the member states with a view to finding lasting solutions as this will remain at the core of our convergence and deliberations”. Onigbanjo stated that part of its mandate includes the pursuit of true federalism, adherence to the constitution, rule of law, independence of the judiciary, as well as liaison with the AGF on behalf of the states on legal issues. Other critical legal issues discussed at the meeting includes the State Anti-Corruption Commission established by States, FIRS threat to recovering “unremitted tax deductions by States” and Local Governments, current issues in the legal profession and related matters, pensions and gratuity for Judges, amongst others.

Sanwo-Olu Swears in 14 new High Court Judges

Lagos Governor,Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu yesterday swore in 14 new Judges for the high court while  urging them to dispense justice quickly and fairly ,without fear or living and acting above board in all circumstances “in your hands lies great power to punish wrong doers and free the innocent,the power to send a strong message to society about the primacy of the rule of law and to contribute to the growing body of jurisprudence in the country” The Governor  stressed that Government is committed to supporting the judiciary to achieve its purposes and also ensure they are comfortable enough to perform optimally “Judges who take their work seriously can do a lot to rebuild the confidence of citizens  in the systems and institutions of our nation.A properly functioning judicial system will go a long way in nuturing an environment that enables business and investment…….there is less room for poverty to drive people to crime and criminality “ The Hon.Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice,Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo,SAN while reading the citations of the judges noted that the appointment of the new judges became necessary due to the retirement of some judges in the course of the year Onigbanjo stressed that since the inception of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration in 2019,a total of 24 judges have been sworn in till date thereby making a total of 70judges for Lagos in  fulfilment of the THEMES development agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration . The new benchers consist of nine females and five males They include Justices Olubusola Okunuga,Adenrera Adeyemi,Olufolake Oshin,Oluwatoyin Odusanya,Olumuyiwa Martins,Ariyike Ipaye-Nwachukwu,Batunde Kalaro,Omolade Awope,Akinkunmi Idowu,Olalekan Oresanya,Mujibat Oshodi,Ismaili Ijelu,Mosunmola Balogun and Mathias Dawodu.

Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Signs Administration Of Criminal Justice (Amendment) Law Of Lagos State,2021

Mr. Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu on the 30th of September 2021 assented to the Administration of Criminal Justice (Amendment) Law [ACJL] of Lagos State, 2021. The ACJL was first passed in Lagos State in 2007 and amended in 2011 (more than ten (10) years ago) to ensure the Fundamental Rights of suspects and persons that come into contact with the justice system, as enshrined in the Constitution are protected. In a bid to further strengthen the justice system, promote the rights of victims and suspects as well as address the issue of delay in the Administration of Criminal Justice in Lagos State, key innovative provisions have been introduced as amendments to the Law. The provisions include conducting criminal proceedings through audio and video conferencing platform, powers of Chief Magistrate to visit Police Stations, prohibition of media parade of suspects, compensation to victims of crime, protective measures for victims and witnesses as well as the Establishment of a Crime Data Register and the Criminal Justice Sector Reform Committee to monitor the implementation of this Law. This further reinforces the commitment of Mr. Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to the promotion of Law & Order, Protection of rights of Citizens, decongestion of our Correctional Facilities and ensure a crime-free society in Lagos State. The Ministry of Justice through collaborative effort with Stakeholders in the Administration of Criminal Justice will ensure the provisions of this law are enforced. Moyosore Onigbanjo SAN Hon.
