Lagos Court Sentences Trader to 25 Years Imprisonment for Rape

A Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court sitting in Ikeja, on Friday, 25th June, 2021 sentenced a 43year old trader, Adelaja Oloyede, to 25 years imprisonment for raping a tailor at Ikorodu area of Lagos State. Justice Abiola Soladoye delivered the judgement in suit no ID/8849C/19 between the State of Lagos vs Adelaja Oloyede. The defendant was earlier arraigned on 10th of April, 2019  by the Directorate of Public Prosecutions,  Lagos State Ministry of Justice on a one- count charge of rape. Adelaja Oloyede who pleaded not guilty committed the crime of rape in 2017 at his residence on No. 2, Adelaja Str. Ikorodu, Lagos . The Prosecuting team led by Olusola Soneye, a deputy director in the Directorate of Public Prosecutions said the victim, apart from being raped was sexually harrassed and coaxed to insert some fetish substance into her private part. He added that the victim who was a virgin before the incident pleaded with the defendant during the rape incident, but her plea fell on deaf ears. ” The defendant overpowered her, tore her underwear and raped her. As a result of the rape the victim fell ill and was treated in Kwara State”, Prosecuting Counsel, Olusola noted.  The Prosecuting team presented before the court four Witnesses; the victim, her sister, the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) and a Medical doctor. The Prosecution also tendered the victim’s blood- stained underwear and a black- tie as exhibits to the Court. According to the victim, the defendant, forcefully had sexual intercourse with her and inserted a fetish substance in her private part afterwards. “I was on my way to church on the day of the incident, Oloyede shook my hands and thereafter I followed him to his house, where he led me into a room where there was numerous fetish items” “He asked me to kneel and he made several incantations” the victim explained. The victim told the court that she reported the crime to the authorities immediately after she left the defendant’s residence. Justice Abiola Soladoye found the defendant guilty of the charge of rape contrary to section 260 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015. She said that the Prosecution team had proved its case against the defendant beyond all reasonable doubts. Consequently, the defendant having been found guilty of the charge of  rape was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment by the Court. The Judge further ordered that Oloyede Adelaja should be registered as a Sex Offender in the Lagos State Sex Offender’s Register.

Man Bags 3 Years Imprisonment for Rape

A Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja, on Monday 8th, March 2021 sentenced one Henry Egesi to 3 years imprisonment for raping a 19 years old girl in Lagos. Justice Nwaka – Gbagi delivered the judgement in charge no ID/6155C/2017 between the State of Lagos vs Henry Egesi The defendant was arraigned by the Directorate of Public Prosecutions on behalf of Lagos State Government in 2019. Henry Egesi who was arraigned on a one-count charge reportedly committed the crime on 9th May, 2019. According to the Prosecuting Counsel, Solicitor-General/ Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Ms. Titilayo Shitta-Bey, the  offence of rape is contrary to section 260 (1) of the Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State 2015. The Solicitor- General noted that all evidences tendered before the court confirmed that the defendant had an unlawful carnal knowledge of the victim. She, however, urged the court to show no leniency in its sentencing of the defendant. Hon. Justice Nwaka – Gbagi found the defendant guilty of the charge, punishable under section 260 (1) of the Lagos State Criminal Justice Law 2015. Lagos court Sentences man To 25 Years Imprisonment for Defilement

Lagos State Sexual Offences Court, Ikeja on Thursday, sentenced one Nura Asumoge to 25 years imprisonment for defilement of a 13-year old minor in Lagos. The defendant was earlier arraigned by the Lagos State Government on a one-count charge in 2018. Nura Asumoge, who plead guilty to the charge, was said to have sent the unsuspecting underaged victim on an errand on 3rd April 2018, on her return, the defendant forcefully had sexual intercourse with the victim and threatened her from informing anyone. The Prosecuting Counsel, Mrs. Arinola Momoh-Ayonkanmbi, of the State Ministry Justice, had urged the court to sentence the defendant accordingly having proved beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant  committed the offence for which he was charged. She noted that several evidences brought before the Court by the Prosecution had proved the allegation of the crime levied against the defendant. The trial judge,  Hon. Justice A.O Soladoye in her sentencing, stated that the evidences provided by the prosecutors were credible and compelling providing enough  ground for the conviction of the defendant. Justice Soladoye found the defendant guilty of the charge, punishable under section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State (2015) and sentenced him accordingly. “You are hereby sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for the offence of defilement of a 13 year old girl”, Justice Soladoye ruled. She, however ordered that the Convict,  Nura Asumoge’s name be entered into the Sexual Offenders Register in Lagos State. It will be recalled, that the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu during the advocacy WALK against domestic violence organised by DSVRT,  had emphasised the commitment of the State Government to ensure the safety and well-being of the Girl- Child and women in Lagos State .

Court Sentences Two Men To Death With 21 Years Imprisonment For Rape

Lagos State High Court, Igbosere on Wednesday sentenced two robbers, Williams Umoh Udoh and Ubong Lazarus Isaiah to death for armed robbery in Lagos. The court sentenced Ubong Isaiah to death for armed robbery while Williams Udoh was sentenced to a separate 21 years imprisonment for rape at the scene of the crime. The two robbers were earlier arraigned by the Lagos State Government. on an amended five-count charge dated 29th June 2017. The defendants, who pleaded not guilty, robbed the residents of  Shepherd Estate, Ijegun on the 2nd of August 2015 while the 1st defendant William Udoh raped one of the victims on her matrimonial bed. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had earlier declared zero tolerance to rape and other forms of criminal activities in the state. The duo was arrested by the police and arraigned for conspiracy to commit robbery and armed robbery which contravenes the criminal justice act of Lagos  State. The  prosecutor, Ms Titilayo Shitta-Bey, Solicitor General/ Permanent Secretary Ministry of Justice, urged the court to sentence the defendants accordingly having found them guilty of the charges against them. She noted that the testimonies of six witnesses including the victim of rape and armed robbery confirmed the allegations of the crime agains t Udoh and Isiah.. The trial judge, Hon. Justice Atinuke Ipaye stated that the evidence provided by the prosecutor’s witnesses was credible, compelling, and cogent to the ground the conviction of the defendants. Justice Ipaye found the two robbers guilty of the charge and punishable under section 261, 297 and 295 (2) of the Criminal Law, CH, C.17 Vol 13 Laws of Lagos State 2015. “You are hereby sentenced to death on the counts of conspiracy to commit robbery and Armed robbery while the first defendant William Udoh is further sentenced to 21years imprisonment for the offence of rape,” Justice Ipaye ruled.
