SANWO-OLU APPROVES RELEASE OF 52 INMATES AND COMMUTAL OF 6 DEATH ROW INMATES TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu recently, on the 31st of December, 2024 on the recommendations of the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, approved the release of 52 inmates from various correctional facilities across the State and the commutal of 6 death row inmates to Life imprisonment. The release order was for the immediate release of 35 inmates while others are to be released after serving additional term between 3 – 6 months. This is in exercise of Mr. Governors’ powers under Section 212 (1) & (2) of the 1999 Constitution of The Federal Republic of Nigeria (As amended). The approval for the release of the inmates is also in line with the commitment of Mr.Governor to decongest correctional facilities in Lagos State as part of the Justice Sector Reforms in the State. The Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy in reaching it’s recommendations exercised due diligence in its deliberation of the applications brought before it in line with the applicable guidelines with information provided by the Authority of the correctional facilities, the nature of offence the inmate was convicted for, period of incarceration, age, health condition and the behavioural conduct of the inmate. Before their release, the correctional centres are to confirm that arrangements have been put in place for the rehabilitation and integration into the society of the convicted inmates recommended for release. Mr. Governor also admonished the inmates to be of good behavior. The release order is to be complied with after completion of the administrative process by the correctional facilities. PRESS RELEASE: PREROGATIVE OF MERCY

SANWO-OLU APPROVES RELEASE OF 55 INMATES. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu recently, on the 15th of October, 2024 on the recommendations of the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy has approved the release of 55 inmates from various correctional facilities across the State.The release order was for the immediate release of 40 inmates while others are to be released after serving additional term of between 3 – 6 months. This is in exercise of the Governors powers under Section 212 (1) & (2) of the 1999 Constitution of The Federal Republic of Nigeria (As amended). The approval for the release of the inmates is also in line with the commitment of Mr.Governor to decongest correctional facilities in Lagos State as part of the Justice Sector Reforms in the State. The Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy in reaching it’s recommendations exercised due diligence in its deliberation of the applications brought before it in line with the applicable guidelines with information provided by the Authority of the correctional facilities, the nature of offence the inmate was convicted for, period of incarceration, age, health condition and the behavioural conduct of the inmate. SANWO-OLU APPROVES RELEASE OF 56 INMATES, COMMUTTAL OF 1 DEATH ROW INMATE TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT AND 1 PARDON Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu on the recommendation of the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy has approved the release of 56 inmates from various correctional facilities across the State and the commuttal of 1 inmate on death row to life imprisonment. The Governor also approved the pardon of 1 inmate. The Governor signed the release, commuttal and pardon orders on the 25th of June, 2024. The exercise is in pursuant to the provisions of Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of The Federal Republic of Nigeria (amended). The Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy in reaching its recommendations exercised due diligence in its deliberation of the applications in line with the applicable guidelines. The Council took note of the information provided by the correctional authorities, the nature of offence, period of incarceration, age, health and behavioral conduct of the inmates. The approval for the release of the inmates is in line with the commitment of Mr. Governor to decongest correctional facilities in Lagos State as part of the Justice Sector Reforms. Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu on the recommendation of the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy has approved the release of 246 inmates from various correctional facilities across the State and the commuttal of 39 inmates on death row to life imprisonment. The Governor signed the release and commuttal orders on the 20th of December, 2023 in cognizance of the New Year Celebrations. The exercise is in pursuant to the provisions of Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of The Federal Republic of Nigeria (amended). The Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy in reaching its recommendations exercised due diligence in its deliberation of the applications in line with the applicable guidelines. The Council took note of the information provided by the correctional authorities, the nature of offence, period of incarceration, age, health and behavioral conduct of the inmates. The Governor signed the Release Order on the 26th of May, 2023 in cognizance of his Inauguration for the second term in office as Governor of Lagos State. The exercise is in pursuant to the provisions of Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of The Federal Republic of Nigeria (As amended). The Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy in reaching its recommendations exercised due diligence in its deliberation of the applications in line with the applicable guidelines, information provided by the correctional authorities, the nature of offence, period of incarceration, age, health and also the behavioral conduct of the inmates. The exercise is pursuant to the provisions of Section 212 (1)&(2) of the 1999 Constitution of The Federal Republic of Nigeria ( as amended). Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu on the recommendation of the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy has approved the release of 46 inmates from various correctional facilities across the State and the commuttal of 6 inmates on death roll to life imprisonment. The Governor signed the release and commuttal orders on the 28th of September, 2022 in cognizance of the country’s 62nd Independence Day Celebration. The exercise is in pursuant to the provisions of Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of The Federal Republic of Nigeria (amended). The Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy in reaching its recommendations exercised due diligence in its deliberation of the applications in line with the applicable guidelines. The Council took note of the information provided by the correctional authorities, the nature of offence, period of incarceration, age, health and behavioral conduct of the inmates.
