OPD RESCUES VICTIMS OF DEFILEMENT, HANDS SUSPECT TO POLICE

The Lagos State Office of the Public Defender (OPD), acting on a tip off has recently rescued four young girl victims of defilement in Ikorodu area of the State and a suspect Sunday Fatoba aged 41 years has been arrested by officers of the Nigeria Police in lgbogbo for investigation. The suspect was alleged to have had regular intercourse with the victims whose ages are between eleven (11)  and fourteen (14) years, and among them are siblings of the same parent, this continued until OPD got wind of the situation and got the perpetrator arrested. The arrest of the suspect was made possible through the information received by the OPD Ikorodu from a concerned member of the public. The community leaders thereafter collaborated with the Nigeria Police, lgbogbo to effect the arrest of the suspect and assist in the Police investigation. Reacting to the incident, the Director, Lagos State Office of the Public Defender (OPD), Mrs. Olubunmi Adesomoju commended the community leaders for standing by the law to promote justice for the victims. The Director urged community leaders and citizens within the State to join hands with the OPD in the fight against the violation of human rights, support protection of the vulnerable in the society and report cases of rape and defilement to the nearest office of the OPD. She assured members of the public that any information received from them would be treated with a despatch, and the identity of such informant would be protected with utmost confidentiality.

PRESS RELEASE: LAGOS COURT REMANDS DR. OLUFEMI OLALEYE OVER ALLEDGED DEFILEMENT

A Domestic and Sexual Violence Court sitting in Ikeja on Wednesday has remanded one Dr. Olufemi Olaleye of Optimal Cancer Care Foundation, over alleged Defilement and Sexual Penetration of his wife’s niece. The defendant was arraigned today, 30th of November, 2022, before Hon. Justice Ramon Oshodi, on a two-count charge of defilement and sexual penetration against a minor which is contrary to Sections 137 and 261 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015. Olaleye pleaded not guilty before the court. Hon. Justice Ramon Oshodi granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50 million with two sureties in like sum, adding that the sureties must have landed property in the state and also provide evidence of tax payments in the last three years. The defendant must also deposit his international passport including his British passport. The Director, Directorate of Public Prosecution, Dr. Babajide Martins, argued that the condition for bail is well noted in the law, noting that the charge against him attracts life sentence. However, Hon. Justice Ramon Oshodi ruled that the defendant be remanded is Ikoyi correctional facility, while he fixed trial for 19th and 21st of December, 2022.

Court Sentences Father of 3 To Life Imprisonment

A Domestic and Sexual Violence Court sitting in Ikeja on Thursday has sentenced one Micheal Ogbar to life imprisonment for Defilement of Child and Rape. The father of 3 aged 13, 21 and 25 was earlier arraigned before Hon. Justice Abiola Soladoye on the 3rd of December, 2018 for a 1 count charge of the Defilement of a Child, contrary to Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 and 2 counts charge of Rape, contrary to section 258 (1) of the criminal Law of Lagos State 2011. The prosecution presented six (6) witnesses to who testified that the defendant had unlawful sexual intercourse with his three daughters. Hon. Justice Abiola Soladoye held that the Prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and thereby convicted and sentenced the defendant accordingly. “The defendant is found guilty as charged as the burden of proof has been discharged and sentenced to life imprisonment on three (3) counts charge which are to run concurrently without the option of a fine”. His name is to be registered in the sexual offenders register maintained by the Lagos State Government.

Lagos court Sentences man To 25 Years Imprisonment for Defilement

Lagos State Sexual Offences Court, Ikeja on Thursday, sentenced one Nura Asumoge to 25 years imprisonment for defilement of a 13-year old minor in Lagos. The defendant was earlier arraigned by the Lagos State Government on a one-count charge in 2018. Nura Asumoge, who plead guilty to the charge, was said to have sent the unsuspecting underaged victim on an errand on 3rd April 2018, on her return, the defendant forcefully had sexual intercourse with the victim and threatened her from informing anyone. The Prosecuting Counsel, Mrs. Arinola Momoh-Ayonkanmbi, of the State Ministry Justice, had urged the court to sentence the defendant accordingly having proved beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant  committed the offence for which he was charged. She noted that several evidences brought before the Court by the Prosecution had proved the allegation of the crime levied against the defendant. The trial judge,  Hon. Justice A.O Soladoye in her sentencing, stated that the evidences provided by the prosecutors were credible and compelling providing enough  ground for the conviction of the defendant. Justice Soladoye found the defendant guilty of the charge, punishable under section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State (2015) and sentenced him accordingly. “You are hereby sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for the offence of defilement of a 13 year old girl”, Justice Soladoye ruled. She, however ordered that the Convict,  Nura Asumoge’s name be entered into the Sexual Offenders Register in Lagos State. It will be recalled, that the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu during the advocacy WALK against domestic violence organised by DSVRT,  had emphasised the commitment of the State Government to ensure the safety and well-being of the Girl- Child and women in Lagos State .
